No-Panic Guide to Head Lice Treatment

Items such as hats, grooming aids, and towels that come in contact with the hair of an infested person should not be shared. Vacuuming furniture and floors can remove an infested person’s hairs that might have viable nits attached. The diagnosis of a head lice infestation is best made by finding a live nymph or adult louse on the scalp or hair of a person. Because nymphs and adult lice are very small, move quickly, and avoid light, they can be difficult to find. Use of a magnifying lens and a fine-toothed comb may be helpful to find live lice. Nits that are attached more than ¼ inch from the base of the hair shaft are almost always dead or already hatched.

The presence of head lice isn't a reflection of hygiene habits. It's also not a failure on the parent if a child gets head lice. If head lice or nits are found, every member of the family should be checked. It is also important to notify your child’s school, day care or playmates, as anyone who comes in close contact with someone with head lice should be examined. According to studies cited in a 2023 review, in industrialized countries, head lice infestations tend to occur in school-age children, as they often engage in close social contact.

What causes head lice?

Special medicated shampoos that contain a substance called pyrethrins are available to kill lice. If you think you've rid yourself of head lice only to have them return a couple of weeks later, chances are you didn't get every last louse and nit. Following through with treatment, repeating combing, and re-shampooing (per directions) are critical. Combing out the lice is the essential step of any head lice treatment. A special lice comb with narrow teeth can help you remove nits and lice. Between 6 million and 12 million lice infestations occur annually in school-age children in the United States.

A dermatologist can treat your child safely and effectively

Sometimes the itching can lead to excessive scratching that can sometimes increase the chance of a secondary skin infection. People also use a number of home or natural remedies to get rid of head lice. But there is little to no clinical evidence that they're effective. Another common misconception is that head lice can jump or fly from one person to another. Head lice only crawl, most often leading to transmission through direct head-to-head contact. Medications that treat head lice are available over-the-counter (OTC) and by prescription.

What to do after treatment

Many small studies have shown that ingredients in some of these products — mostly plant oils such as coconut, olive, rosemary and tea tree — may work to repel lice. However, these products are classified as "natural," so they aren't regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Their safety and effectiveness haven't been tested to FDA standards. Anyone who comes into direct contact with someone with head lice can get them, primarily through head-to-head contact. Fumigation uses toxic chemicals that may cause harm if they breathe it in or their skin absorbs it. However, the CDC notes that they occur less frequently in African Americans compared to other races.

Since no medication reliably destroys all lice eggs, experts often recommend repeat treatment 7 to 10 days after the first treatment. This article examines who might get head lice, treatment options, and how to prevent head lice. Anyone can get lice — no matter where you live, how old you are, or how often you wash your hair. Since lice feed on blood in your scalp, it doesn’t matter whether your hair is freshly shampooed or not. While you can get head lice at any age, lice do tend to affect children more often than adults.

Natural products can give parents false sense of safety

Anyone who comes in head-to-head contact with someone who already has head lice is at greatest risk. Spread by contact with clothing (such as hats, scarves, coats) or other personal items (such as combs, brushes, or towels) used by an infested person is uncommon. Personal hygiene or cleanliness in the home or school has nothing to do with getting head lice. If a head lice treatment that you can buy without a prescription fails to work, the CDC recommends that you see a health care provider. Highly effective prescription treatments that you apply to the scalp are available.

The charity Community Hygiene Concern has a video about wet combing for head lice. Some treatments need to be repeated after a week to kill any newly hatched lice. Check everyone you live with, or have close contact with, and start treating anyone who has head lice on the same day. After 12 hours, a person can use a very fine comb, known as a nit comb, to remove the dead eggs and lice.

If you use too much, or swallow some by mistake, it may harm your brain or nervous system. The myth that head lice prefer unwashed hair has fueled plenty of stigma. In reality, there’s no link between these tiny parasites and personal hygiene. If these are not effective, a doctor can recommend a prescription medicine instead. Do wet combing on days 1, 5, 9 and 13 to catch any newly hatched head lice. But such policies have several flaws, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

You can use over-the-counter (OTC) treatments, prescription treatments, or home remedies to kill and remove head lice. A person should treat head lice with OTC or prescription treatments, which some people call lice shampoo. However, some lice eggs may survive the first treatment application. Doctors often recommend two rounds of treatment to ensure it kills all the lice and their eggs. Some parents turn to home remedies for head lice, such as tea tree oil, mayonnaise, neem oil, vinegar, saline spray and many others.

Washing hats, pillow cases and similar items that touch the head in hot water may help contain head lice. However, disinfecting your house is not necessary because the transmission of head lice from inanimate objects is rare. Head lice are mainly down near the scalp where they feed and lay their eggs. And you cannot put a hair straightener too close to your scalp because you will risk burning yourself. Despite there being products marketed as head lice repellents, Dr Webb says there is little evidence showing that these stop lice from biting or infesting in the first place.

Without a blood meal several times daily, an adult louse will die within a few days. Intense itching on the scalp and neck could indicate the presence of head lice. Sensations of something crawling or moving in the hair also could be a sign of head lice. To determine if head lice are present, look for signs of nits attached to the hair shaft. If it comes off the hair easily, it is most likely not a nit, but dandruff or hair product residue.

Recent reports suggest that taking selfies could help to spread nits around the schoolyard. Here are seven myths about head lice that are completely wrong! That may be partly because misconceptions abound about lice—about how they behave, where they're spread, and how they're best treated. Here, we asked experts to weigh in on four widespread beliefs and the truth behind them. The CDC says there is no need to fumigate your house or treat your pets for lice. Having lice has nothing to do with cleanliness or environment, as they don’t come from the outdoors or your pets.

Before you start treatment, understand how your child could have gotten head lice. Head lice don’t jump, they don’t live on pets and they have nothing to do with personal hygiene. The most common way head lice spread is by head-to-head contact. This means your child must have been touching heads with someone who has head lice. Head lice need to have a blood meal every 12 to 24 hours, so they can’t survive away from a human head for longer than a day. Items that cannot be laundered may be dry-cleaned or sealed in a plastic bag for two weeks.

Researchers have also found that another reason non-prescription head-lice treatments fail to work is that the child doesn’t have lice. Both the CDC and the FDA warn against treating this common childhood condition on your own with non-prescription treatments. A nymph hatches from the egg and goes through several stages of growth before turning into an adult head louse. Nymphs look similar to adult head lice but are smaller, roughly the same size as a pinhead. Routine vacuuming of floors and furniture is sufficient to remove lice or nits that may have fallen off the head of an infested person. Only items that have been in contact with the head of the infested person in the 48 hours before treatment need be considered for cleaning.

Head Lice Signs, Symptoms, Causes & Treatment

does lice like clean hair

Many prescription head lice treatments target nits along with adult head lice. If you used a product like this, no combing is necessary unless you can’t wait to get rid of the dead shells. There isn’t any scientific evidence that at-home remedies, like using salt or other food products like olive oil or mayonnaise, get rid of head lice. The only recommended treatment for head lice is over-the-counter medicated or prescription shampoos, lotions or creams. Head lice are tiny, crawling insects that live in the hair on a person’s head.

What do the eggs look like?

Over-the-counter medicated shampoos contain a substance called pyrethrin or permethrin that kill lice and nits. If you look closely at your child’s hair on their scalp, you may be able to see the tiny white nits attached to the hair shafts. Nits resemble dandruff but aren’t as easy to brush or shake off the hair. Adult lice can move around quickly and are difficult to see.

Can Lice Live on Wigs?

So the risk of spreading head lice is greatest among children who play or go to school together. In the United States, cases of head lice most often occur in children in preschool through elementary school. Thorough treatment of head lice is necessary to ensure all lice have been eliminated.

How to treat lice at home

Nits are often confused with other things found in the hair such as dandruff, hair spray droplets, and dirt particles. There are several prescription products that kill head lice. Always start with clean hair, but avoid using a combination shampoo-and-conditioner product before lice treatment application. In addition, you shouldn’t wash your or your child’s hair one to two days after you remove the lice medicine. Hearing that your child has head lice can be a stressful experience.

Additional Tips for Getting Rid of Head Lice

They are commonly found in school-age children, although anyone can contract them. Lice spread from person to person through close contact and by sharing belongings. Head lice often spread from one person to another by direct head-to-head contact, often within a family or among children who have close contact at school or play. Getting head lice isn’t a sign of poor hygiene or unclean surroundings. Sometimes parents — and even medical professionals — mistake another medical condition for head lice. An allergy or irritated skin could be causing those itchy, red bumps and flakes on your child’s scalp.

When to see a doctor

For years, parents have been buying these non-prescription shampoos and cream rinses. Because the active ingredients have remained the same all these years, new generations of head lice have become immune to them. People can treat a head lice infestation with over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription medication, which will kill the head lice. The two treatments 9 days apart are designed to eliminate all live lice, and any lice that may hatch from eggs that were laid after the first treatment. If wet combing has not worked or is not suitable, you could try a medicated lotion or spray.

Head lice can affect anyone but occur most often among children between the ages of 3 to 11 years old, along with their families. Children are more at risk, as they make head-to-head contact with other children when playing together and may share items that have contact with their hair. Head lice should not be considered as a medical or public health hazard. Head lice can be an annoyance because their presence may cause itching and loss of sleep.

Lice can easily survive on all textures, from very curly to completely straight. It does seem they have an easier time reproducing if there's a little bit of texture, like waves or loose curls. The answer to that is no; they will go to any head that has hair available.

How can I prevent head lice?

Over the years, some lice (called “super lice”) evolved so that the over-the-counter treatments don’t effectively kill the lice. Powerful prescription drugs are available that can eliminate super lice with one dose. Make sure you follow the directions on over-the-counter medicines. The treatment is only successful if you follow the instructions on how to apply the treatment, how long you should leave it in your hair and how often you should repeat the treatment.

It is possible, although very unlikely, to find nits or lice in beard hair. Beards are the wrong temperature and texture for head lice to thrive. If using a prescription treatment worries you, it may help to know that today’s non-prescription lice medications were once only available with a prescription.

Our experts continually monitor the health and wellness space, and we update our articles when new information becomes available. Estimates suggest that each year, between 6 and 12 million infestations affect kids ages 3 to 11 in the United States. While you may find lice on wigs, lice cannot survive long on a wig itself. They can, however, use the wig to climb to the scalp, which they access around the edges or through the holes in the wig.

Seek the advice of your health care provider or health department if you have questions. Natural remedies for head lice involve applying oil, such as olive oil or mayonnaise, or petroleum jelly, to the hair to suffocate the lice. Most people who choose this method saturate the hair and scalp and cover it with a shower cap overnight. Then, they shampoo and comb out the lice and nits in the morning. As an alternative to OTC or prescription treatments, you can manually comb out the lice and nits with a fine-toothed comb or a specially designed lice comb. Applying olive oil to the hair can help capture the lice and nits.

Read on to learn about the most effective ways to kill head lice and how to keep them away. The most common symptom of head lice is itching, especially on the back of your head and neck and near your ears — areas where lice are more likely to live. Dogs, cats, and other pets do not play a role in the spread of head lice. Head lice are a nuisance, but, fortunately, they do not spread disease.

First-term state Rep. If passed by the House and Senate and signed by the governor, the bill would reduce the maximum period for which people can gather unemployment benefits in a given year from 26 to 20 weeks. Currently, workers' comp wage benefits are calculated by multiplying a worker's hourly wage by the average number of hours they worked in the four weeks preceding the workplace accident. Crews' bill proposes jettisoning that system and instead calculating their weekly wages by taking the total amount of money they received in the 52 weeks before their accident divided by 52. Only when the unemployment rate rises above 8.5% would workers be able to claim benefits for the maximum 20 weeks.

I showed the stylist a picture of how my hair looked a year ago for reference to recreate the layers. I did everything I could to communicate clearly...I ended up with a blunt cut chin-length bob.

Experimental Design

block design stats

A Graeco-Latin square is orthogonal between rows, columns, Latin letters and Greek letters. For instance, we might do this experiment all in the same factory using the same machines and the same operators for these machines. The first replicate would occur during the first week, the second replicate would occur during the second week, etc. Week one would be replication one, week two would be replication two and week three would be replication three. The test on the block factor is typically not of interest except to confirm that you used a good blocking factor. The Analysis of Variance table shows three degrees of freedom for Tip three for Coupon, and the error degrees of freedom is nine.

Missing Data

The numerator of the F-test, for the hypothesis you want to test, should be based on the adjusted SS's that is last in the sequence or is obtained from the adjusted sums of squares. That will be very close to what you would get using the approximate method we mentioned earlier. The general linear test is the most powerful test for this type of situation with unbalanced data.

Table of contents

Latin Square Designs are probably not used as much as they should be - they are very efficient designs. In other words, these designs are used to simultaneously control (or eliminate) two sources of nuisance variability. For instance, if you had a plot of land the fertility of this land might change in both directions, North -- South and East -- West due to soil or moisture gradients. As we shall see, Latin squares can be used as much as the RCBD in industrial experimentation as well as other experiments. The dataset oatvar in the faraway library contains information about an experiment on eight different varieties of oats. Within each block, the researchers created eight plots and randomly assigned a variety to a plot.

The use of blocking in experimental design has an evolving history that spans multiple disciplines. The foundational concepts of blocking date back to the early 20th century with statisticians like Ronald A. Fisher. His work in developing analysis of variance (ANOVA) set the groundwork for grouping experimental units to control for extraneous variables.

This means the effect of cell phone use treatment (yes vs. no) on the dependent variable, driving ability, should not be influenced by the level of driving experience (seasoned, intermediate, inexperienced). In other words, the impact of cell phone use treatment (yes vs. no) on the dependent variable should be similar regardless of the level of driving experience. If this assumption is violated, randomized block ANOVA should not performed. One possible alternative is to treat it like a factorial ANOVA where the independent variables are allowed to interact with each other. To address nuisance variables, researchers can employ different methods such as blocking or randomization.

7 - Incomplete Block Designs

block design stats

Note that blocking is a special way to design an experiment, or a special“flavor” of randomization. Blocking can also be understood as replicating an experimenton multiple sets, e.g., different locations, of homogeneous experimental units,e.g., plots of land at an individual location. The experimental units shouldbe as similar as possible within the same block, but can be very differentbetween different blocks. This design allows us to fully remove thebetween-block variability, e.g., variability between different locations, fromthe response because it can be explained by the block factor. In that sense, blocking is a so-calledvariance reduction technique.

Chapter 12 Block Designs

Let's take a look at how this is implemented in Minitab using GLM. Use the viewlet below to walk through an initial analysis of the data (cow_diets.mwx | cow_diets.csv) for this experiment with cow diets. The following crossover design, is based on two orthogonal Latin squares.

Comparing the CRD to the RCBD

Here we have two pairs occurring together 2 times and the other four pairs occurring together 0 times. Therefore, this is not a balanced incomplete block design (BIBD). What we now realize is that two blocking factors is not enough! It looks like day of the week could affect the treatments and introduce bias into the treatment effects, since not all treatments occur on Monday. We want a design with 3 blocking factors; machine, operator, and day of the week.

However because our irrigation system can’t be fine-tuned, we have plots with different irrigation levels and within each plot we have perhaps four subplots that have the fertilizer treatment. To summarize, Irrigation treatments were randomly assigned to plots, and fertilizer treatments were randomly assigned to sub-plots. If the number of times treatments occur together within a block is equal across the design for all pairs of treatments then we call this a balanced incomplete block design (BIBD). Since \(\lambda\) is not an integer there does not exist a balanced incomplete block design for this experiment. Seeing as how the block size in this case is fixed, we can achieve a balanced complete block design by adding more replicates so that \(\lambda\) equals at least 1.

In this case, the test specimens would be considered a source of nuisance variability. If we conduct this as a blocked experiment, we would assign all four tips to the same test specimen, randomly assigned to be tested on a different location on the specimen. Since each treatment occurs once in each block, the number of test specimens is the number of replicates. When we have a single blocking factor available for our experiment we will try to utilize a randomized complete block design (RCBD). We also consider extensions when more than a single blocking factor exists which takes us to Latin Squares and their generalizations. When we can utilize these ideal designs, which have nice simple structure, the analysis is still very simple, and the designs are quite efficient in terms of power and reducing the error variation.

This is a Case 2 where the column factor, the cows are nested within the square, but the row factor, period, is the same across squares. If we only have two treatments, we will want to balance the experiment so that half the subjects get treatment A first, and the other half get treatment B first. For example, if we had 10 subjects we might have half of them get treatment A and the other half get treatment B in the first period. After we assign the first treatment, A or B, and make our observation, we then assign our second treatment. We give the treatment, then we later observe the effects of the treatment. This is followed by a period of time, often called a washout period, to allow any effects to go away or dissipate.

Here is a plot of the least squares means for Yield with the missing data, not very different. There are 23 degrees of freedom total here so this is based on the full set of 24 observations. Generally the unexplained error in the model will be larger, and therefore the test of the treatment effect less powerful. Then, under the null hypothesis of no treatment effect, the ratio of the mean square for treatments to the error mean square is an F statistic that is used to test the hypothesis of equal treatment means. Randomized block ANOVA shares all assumptions of regular ANOVA. There are two additional assumptions unique to randomized block ANOVA.

Blocking in experimental design

block design stats

We have not randomized these, although you would want to do that, and we do show the third square different from the rest. The row effect is the order of treatment, whether A is done first or second or whether B is done first or second. So, if we have 10 subjects we could label all 10 of the subjects as we have above, or we could label the subjects 1 and 2 nested in a square. This is similar to the situation where we have replicated Latin squares - in this case five reps of 2 × 2 Latin squares, just as was shown previously in Case 2.

ANOVA and Mixed Models:

This is followed by a second treatment, followed by an equal period of time, then the second observation. The simplest case is where you only have 2 treatments and you want to give each subject both treatments. Here as with all crossover designs we have to worry about carryover effects.

ANOVA: Yield versus Batch, Pressure

The varieties were applied to the main plots and the manurial treatments to the sub-plots. In determining the significance of variety the above F-value and p-value is correct. We have 40 observations (5 per variety), and after accounting for the model structure (including the extraneous blocking variable), we have \(28\) residual degrees of freedom. When we have missing data, it affects the average of the remaining treatments in a row, i.e., when complete data does not exist for each row - this affects the means.

Example 8-10: Rice Data (Experimental Design)

In this experiment, each specimen is called a “block”; thus, we have designed a more homogenous set of experimental units on which to test the tips. A block is characterized by a set of homogeneous plots or a set of similar experimental units. In agriculture a typical block is a set of contiguous plots of land under the assumption that fertility, moisture, weather, will all be similar, and thus the plots are homogeneous.

Blocking (statistics)

block design stats

The incidence matrix of a non-binary design lists the number of times each element is repeated in each block. Ok, with this scenario in mind, let's consider three cases that are relevant and each case requires a different model to analyze. The cases are determined by whether or not the blocking factors are the same or different across the replicated squares.

Here is a plot of the least square means for treatment and period. We can see in the table below that the other blocking factor, cow, is also highly significant. Again, for any unbalanced data situation, we will use the GLM. For most of our examples, GLM will be a useful tool for analyzing and getting the analysis of variance summary table. Even if you are unsure whether your data are orthogonal, one way to check if you simply made a mistake in entering your data is by checking whether the sequential sums of squares agree with the adjusted sums of squares. If this point is missing we can substitute x, calculate the sum of squares residuals, and solve for x which minimizes the error and gives us a point based on all the other data and the two-way model.

The final step in the blocking process is allocating your observations into different treatment groups. All you have to do is go through your blocks one by one and randomly assign observations from each block to treatment groups in a way such that each treatment group gets a similar number of observations from each block. The next thing you need to do after you determine your blocking factors is allocate your observations into blocks.

block design stats

The selection of blocking variables should be based on previous literature. Many such cases are discussed in.[7] However, it can also be observed trivially for the magic squares or magic rectangles which can be viewed as the partially balanced incomplete block designs. We have four different varieties of rice; varieties A, B, C, and D. So, imagine each of these blocks as a rice field or patty on a farm somewhere.

General balanced designs (t-designs)

Unfortunately nuisance variables often arise in experimental studies, which are variables that effect the relationship between the explanatory and response variable but are of no interest to researchers. For example you might have 5 levels of a factor, but when you split your block into plots, you can only create 3 plots. We have 3 varieties of oats, and 4 levels of fertilizer (manure). To each set of 3 plots, we’ll randomly assign the 3 varieties, and to each set of subplots, we’ll assign the fertilizers. The yield of oats from a split-plot field trial using three varieties and four levels of manurial treatment. The experiment was laid out in 6 blocks of 3 main plots, each split into 4 sub-plots.

We consider an example which is adapted from Venables and Ripley (2002), the original source isYates (1935) (we will see the full data set in Section 7.3). Atsix different locations (factor block), three plots of land were available.Three varieties of oat (factor variety with levels Golden.rain, Marvellousand Victory) were randomized to them, individually per location. Gender is a common nuisance variable to use as a blocking factor in experiments since males and females tend to respond differently to a wide variety of treatments. So far we have discussed experimental designs with fixed factors, that is, the levels of the factors are fixed and constrained to some specific values. In some cases, the levels of the factors are selected at random from a larger population. In this case, the inference made on the significance of the factor can be extended to the whole population but the factor effects are treated as contributions to variance.

In the introductory example, a blockwas given by an individual subject. Depending on the nature of the experiment, it’s also possible to use several blocking factors at once. However, in practice only one or two are typically used since more blocking factors requires larger sample sizes to derive significant results. By placing the individuals into blocks, the relationship between the new diet and weight loss became more clear since we were able to control for the nuisance variable of gender. One common way to control for the effect of nuisance variables is through blocking, which involves splitting up individuals in an experiment based on the value of some nuisance variable.

There were a couple of rumors circulating around the Upper Peninsula about the House of Ludington. The first rumor is that the place is Pat Hayes haunts the building.

He said that his intrigue began when he was a child growing up two blocks away. He always knew it as an impressive building that was frequented for occasions like family dinners and class reunions. An interest in history drove him to learn more about the additions and stories layered around the House of Ludington. The House of Ludington has been at its location since 1868. The hotel closed its bar and restaurant for renovations in May of 2022. On Thursday, the hotel reopened its bar and restaurant.

An Event Venue that Lets You Be You

The second rumor was that Al Capone had stayed there when he came up to the U.P. To conduct his “business.” But I haven’t heard any corroborating evidence to suggest that he did. I had heard that it was one of his employees that stayed there. During the prohibition years, booze would be smuggled in from Canada through Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan by the Purple Gang (a Jewish gang from detroit) who had “business” dealings with Al Capone.

Escanaba is located in Delta County in the South central part of the Upper Peninsula. The House of Ludington is located in the downtown, next to the city park (Ludington Park). I think the Ludington Park is the best city park in the Upper Peninsula. Gaynor built the Gaynor House hotel, which he renamed the Ludington House in 1871, after lumberman Nelson Ludington.

Pat Hayes had bought the House of Ludington during in 1939. He cooked it his way, which meant he didn’t cook the steaks well done. It seemed like everyone talked about the food and the bar. The important part about the house is that it stands for “Escanaba history”.

Zsolnay met Chown a few months after purchasing the House of Ludington in 2022. The previous owners had run it as more of a bed and breakfast, but kept the business pretty simple and did not utilize nearly the whole space, something the new management is keen to do. Zsolnay appointed Chown as curator and director of operations, and since beginning that role in January of this year, Chown said he has been putting in 16-hour days to get the House back into shape. The second owner, John Christie, expanded what had been a wood structure; by 1911, he had added a gift shop and ballroom downstairs, more rooms upstairs, and covered the facade with brick. In the hands of Pat Hayes, what had been the hotel lobby became the King George room with a large fireplace in 1953. A separate entrance heads into a basement where an old barber shop and beauty spa used to be — salon counters, furniture, and even a tanning bed that looks to be from the 1980s are still in the process of being cleared out.

During the 19-month trial, prosecutors claimed that he was an “idiot,” while Schettino countered that his actions had saved lives and that he was being scapegoated. In addition, he noted the steering error by the helmsman, but a maritime expert testified that regardless of the mistake, the collision was unavoidable. In February 2015 Schettino was convicted on all charges and sentenced to more than 16 years in prison. He appealed the verdict, but it was upheld in May 2017; Schettino began serving his sentence shortly thereafter. The Costa Concordia was owned by Costa Crociere, a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation & PLC.

For Concordia survivor Georgia Ananias, the COVID-19 infections are just the latest evidence that passenger safety still isn’t a top priority for the cruise ship industry. Passengers aboard the Concordia were largely left on their own to find life jackets and a functioning lifeboat after the captain steered the ship close too shore in a stunt. He then delayed an evacuation order until it was too late, with lifeboats unable to lower because the ship was listing too heavily.

Climate change: the connection between land and sea

That night, after dining with Cemortan, Schettino invited her to the bridge of the cruise liner, where he took command of the vessel. A decade after that harrowing night, the survivors are grateful to have made it out alive. None of the survivors who spoke with Cobiella have been on a cruise since that day.

‘I have lived the most beautiful lives and died the most beautiful deaths’

Cruise ship shop worker Fabio Costa said when people realised there was a serious problem, there were scenes of desperation. Then the ship rolled again, now listing to the right, and the captain ordered the ship to be abandoned. "The boat started shaking. The noise - there was panic, like in a film, dishes crashing to the floor, people running, people falling down the stairs," said survivor Fulvio Rocci. The divers wear wetsuits reinforced with Kevlar — the same material used to make bullet-proof vests — and have a guide line to open water, just as they do when exploring caves.

Thirty-two people died when the ship slammed into a reef and capsized off the Tuscan island of Giglio. The dinner plates that flew off the tables when the rocks first gashed the hull. The final mad scramble to evacuate the listing liner and then the extraordinary generosity of Giglio islanders who offered shoes, sweatshirts and shelter until the sun rose and passengers were ferried to the mainland.

Trials

Elizabeth Nanni, of Isola del Giglio Tourist Information, said those who arrived on the island were survivors in a state of shock, ''desperate people looking for each other'' and people suffering from hypothermia after jumping into the sea. Some people decided it was too difficult to get on to a lifeboat and chose to swim, with a number safely reaching the nearby island of Giglio. Italian cave-rescue divers are painstakingly checking thousands of debris-filled cabins on the Italian liner Monday for more than 20 people still unaccounted for out of the 4,200 who were on board.

Escape: The Wreck of the Costa Concordia, Part 2

I was working in a very elegant bar at the back of the ship called Bar Vienna. I remember it was a beautiful night, a starry night, the sea was very calm and quiet. De Falco became such a hero that, when it emerged more than a year later that he had been transferred out of operational service into a desk job, his apparent mistreatment created a new spate of soul-searching in Italy.

What Does Italy’s Sinking Ship Mean for the Cruise Industry?

But after eight years in the US and then Italian court system, they lost their case. "I felt like (my daughters) were going to get trampled, and putting my arms around them and just holding them together and letting the sea of people go by us." With Giglio Island lying in a protected marine area, environmental issues relating to the Concordia wreck were of particular concern. The vessel was on the edge of an underwater cliff, leading to worries that the ship might slip and break apart, causing an oil spill. To lessen any potential damage, oil booms were placed around the wreckage, and in February 2012 salvage workers began removing more than 2,000 tons of fuel; the undertaking was completed the following month. Ananias and her family declined Costa’s initial $14,500 compensation offered to each passenger and sued Costa, a unit of U.S.-based Carnival Corp., to try to cover the cost of their medical bills and therapy for the post-traumatic stress they have suffered.

Some suggested the country did not know how to reward people who showed good character. “I did that to calm the passengers down, I feared that otherwise there would be panic,” Schettino said in his defence at trial. Ten years after the deadly Costa Concordia cruise line disaster in Italy, survivors still vividly remember scenes of chaos they say were like something straight out of the movie "Titanic." The struggle reflects the difficult reality of an industry battered by the pandemic. Mr Metcalf, from Dorset, told the BBC his daughter had phoned to say she was safe but that she had feared she would have to jump into the sea. She said blankets and clothes were provided for those who arrived on the island, while churches and schools were opened to ensure that people had a roof over their head.

Costa Concordia was declared a "constructive total loss" by the cruise line's insurer, and her salvage was "one of the biggest maritime salvage operations". On 16 September 2013, the parbuckle salvage of the ship began, and by the early hours of 17 September, the ship was set upright on her underwater cradle. In July 2014, the ship was refloated using sponsons (flotation tanks) welded to her sides, and was towed 320 kilometres (200 mi) to her home port of Genoa for scrapping, which was completed in July 2017. The sad anniversary comes as the cruise industry, shut down in much of the world for months because of the coronavirus pandemic, is once again in the spotlight because of COVID-19 outbreaks that threaten passenger safety. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control last month warned people across-the-board not to go on cruises, regardless of their vaccination status, because of the risks of infection. Rescuers were painstakingly checking thousands of cabins on the Italian liner for 16 people still unaccounted for out of the 4,200 who were on board. Francesco Schettino, the captain of the cruise liner, was jailed for 16 years for multiple manslaughter after the disaster that left 32 people dead. On 13 January 2012, the Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia capsized off the coast of Tuscany after hitting a rock in the Tyrrhenian Sea. The salvage of the Costa Concordia was the most expensive such operation in history, with an estimated cost of $1.2bn. The operation, led by a wisecracking South African named Nick Sloane, involved first moving the capsized vessel into an upright position, and then slowly shifting it into deeper water. In such an unprecedented operation, environmental contamination was a constant threat, with tonnes of rotting food, passenger belongings and other items still located on the vessel.

"Everybody was trying to get on the boats at the same time. When people had to get on the lifeboats they were pushing each other. It was a bit chaotic. We were trying to keep passengers calm but it was just impossible. Nobody knew what was going on." Monica, a German passenger who was in the cruise liner's theatre when the ship began to suffer problems, said it was hard to reach the lifeboats. It happened on Friday evening and marked the start of hours of panic among the 4,000 people on board the cruise ship. Worsening weather and heavy seas earlier made the wreck slip on the rocky underwater slope where it is lodged off the island of Giglio and rescue teams were evacuated. Few of the 500-odd residents of the fishermen’s village will ever forget the freezing night of Jan. 13, 2012, when the Costa Concordia shipwrecked, killing 32 people and upending life on the island for years. Arnold Donald, chief executive of international cruiseline company Carnival, told Fox Business in June that the company has "far more demand than we have ships available to supply right now." A vice president of Legambiente Liguria told Fortune the organization is considering forming a petition to ask the Italian government to prevent cruise ship operators from parking their ships near Italy's most scenic locations. "We were on the same level as the water so some people started to swim because they weren't able to get on the lifeboats," said Mr Costa. Mr Ordona said his colleagues and passengers were waiting to use lifeboats but the change in the direction the boat was sinking prompted them to seek lifeboats on the other side of the ship. The chief executive of the ship’s owners, Costa Cruises, on Monday blamed human error by Schettino for the disaster.
